Obligerant is Matt and Brett Flynn, with Alex Bustos on drums.  I’ve seen them play on and off around town for nearly the past 10 years.  Aside from the fact that they play super infrequently, they have yet to give up the title of sixth best punk band in San Diego.  I love how these guys rock.  They’re songs are super catchy even though the sound is raunchy and gritty – and their lyrics are hilarious.  They brought all of this and more to the studio when they laid these tracks down.  It’s a rare chance to hear them in hi-fi, and there is also a rare chance to see them in the flesh this coming Friday at the Balboa.

For this session we brought in guest engineer Rich Mansor who was able to give us some interesting new production insights and techniques that we haven’t previously tried before.  Rich has his own analog studio in Spring Valley called Raunchola Productions.  He brought in his drum tunnel that you can see in the photo above and that we used to beef up the sound of the kick drum.  It was a real pleasure working through our sounds with Rich.  Everything come together really nicely with a full thick sound, aside from running out of time to get more clarity from Matt’s vocal.  But hey, it’s punk rock.
